Kibera Medical Record Initiative: Barriers of Implementing an Electronic Medical Record System

Increasing global urbanization has led to the growth of urban slums, challenged by fragmented and inefficient health care services. This is evident in Kibera (Nairobi, Kenya), one of Africa’s largest slums. With an estimated average population of 270,000, it is serviced by over 100 clinics [1], operating in isolation of one another. The Kibera Medical Record Initiative (KMRI) aims to develop and introduce a primary care Electronic Medical Record System (EMRS), to improve healthcare resource utilization. The purpose of this study is to facilitate early identification of possible barriers to uptake of this EMRS.
